The ideal would be to build a shape of a circular section with a radius equal to the radius of the flywheel, and then fix it to the crankcase on the nuts of the flywheel cover so that it touches the flywheel.
By mounting a dial gauge instead of the candle, you search for the PMS, you find a sign with a permanent marker on the flywheel and on the corresponding shape.
always staying at the PMS, we remove the flywheel, and in its place we mount a protractor so as to match the 0 to the mark on the shape. turning counterclockwise we create a graduated scale up to about 30 °, marking each time the cleats we will make.
Refit the flywheel, the spark plug, connect the stroboscopic gun to the spark plug cable and start the engine.
By pointing the pistol at the flywheel, it will emit a luminous flash at each turn, which will make the flywheel appear to stand still. Therefore we will have the possibility to see where the notch on the flywheel corresponds to the graduated scale that we have built before.
If the advance is not where we wanted it will be enough to turn the coil plate clockwise or anticlockwise and check the advance as above.
Once the exact advance has been found it is a good idea to fix the coil plate with the casing, so that if we were to open it tomorrow we should no longer re-check the advance with the stroboscope.
