Description

The intake manifold is the access corridor for the air-fuel mixture into the engine through the door made up of the reed valve.

The total efficiency of an engine is calculated as the product of various partial efficiencies which are:
volumetric efficiency
thermodynamic efficiency
mechanical performance
The volumetric efficiency indicates the ratio between the volume quantity of mixture that can be introduced into the combustion chamber and the engine displacement.

One of the main factors that affects the volumetric efficiency is the friction loss that the incoming fluid (air-fuel mixture) encounters from the air filter until it reaches the combustion chamber, therefore one of the components that significantly influences this loss is the manifold suction, as all the incoming mixture must pass through it with the minimum possible loss, for this reason it is absolutely necessary to avoid sudden increases in section and sharp edges along the path of the mixture.
Another function of the intake manifold is to act as a storage lung for the fresh charge, as the mixture column traveling at a certain speed takes a certain time to stop when the reed valve closes and therefore the mixture accumulates in the manifold, compressing against the slats. For this reason each manifold has its own well-defined speed range within which it expresses maximum efficiency (tuned manifold).
Furthermore, the manifold carries out the task of supporting the carburettor by connecting it to the engine crankcase or the cylinder, therefore it also has, if required, the task of dampening the vibrations that are transmitted from the crankcase to the carburettor, avoiding the phenomenon of emulsion of petrol and air in the carburetor float chamber.
Therefore this apparently simple component requires considerable study in order to fully exploit all its qualities, a result that the Malossi technicians have achieved perfectly.
Malossi, thanks to its decades of experience in fuel systems for engines, has created a new line of manifolds in rubber and aluminum alloy for the new generation scooters, tested and developed by the Malossi experience department, both on the road and on the circuits. of competition.
In particular, the Malossi rubber manifolds have a composite structure as they are built starting from an aluminum insert which is incorporated into a particular plastic material which is resistant to oils and petrol, thus guaranteeing considerable rigidity of the fixing base to the crankcase and a good elasticity of the collector body.
